Welcome

Welcome to “Anyone for Porridge” a decidedly Scottish take on food and all that goes along with it.  I’m Kenny Brown, a food enthusiast of absolutely no repute whatsoever.   My wife J and I have enjoyed eating out for as many years as I can remember, visiting a fair number of Scotland’s premier eateries in the process. On our travels we’ve gathered a wee bit of knowledge of what we want to see put in front of us but you know what they say…a wee bit of knowledge is dangerous.

At home I’ve cooked dinner for over 30 years now and the family are all still alive and well, which is either testament to my cooking or a feather in the cap of the emergency services.  Only their medical records can tell.

A big hello again to those readers of my other blog “Where The Fatdog Walks”.  I bet you didn’t expect this!  I suppose, on reflection, it probably won’t come as too much of a shock as over the years I’ve written the occasional post involving food.

There have been such acclaimed literary triumphs as:

“Langoustine Lunch”

“Moby the Haddock”

“Why Rick Stein Doesn’t have a Michelin Star”

“Why Nathan Outlaw Doesn’t have a Michelin Star – but should!”

“A.A. Gill – Eat Your Heart Out!!!”

But that’s the past…what sort of things can you, the reader, expect from this blog?

I’m hoping for a broad brush magazine approach covering a whole range of food and travel related subjects which will no doubt evolve as time goes on.  What I can say with some degree of certainty is that, although I’ve kicked off with a couple of recipes, there is no plan to turn this blog into a recipe book – I’m hoping that will eventually come in the form of a separate blog – “The Bleating Sheep Cookbook”.  I’ve temporarily housed the cookbook here as a “category” until the layout of its final home is sorted out.

So far it’s all been good news.

On the down side you’ll be subjected to tirades on my pet “foody” hates but hopefully feel compensated by the story of our journey in search of food magic…and I’ve no doubt that I’ll be talking about wine somewhere along the line.

So it’s welcome once again to “Anyone for Porridge”…hope you enjoy the experience.

  1. Welcome to the foodie world! I’m sure I’ve mentioned I had a catering business for 10 years back in the 80s. It was motivated by a lifelong interest in food and wine…. for both of us. The experience was invaluable, and most of it very rewarding (not monetarily). We wore ourselves out, so in 1990 I went back to mainstream employment (government). We’re still foodies, and that experience greatly broadened our understanding and appreciation of the food world. After all, we all eat (or die) so it’s not exactly unique, and it’s good to see how people everywhere are taking an interest in where their food comes from, and an interest in healthful choices.

I thought maybe your were taking off on some tangent never before known to man. You are quite capable of that, you know! ;o)

Looking forward to your “Anyone for Porridge” ventures.

  2. Hi Florene – good to see you made the jump :D . A bit of a change from hillwalking isn’t it.

J’s been at me to do something foody for a long while now…mainly because she wants more “hands on” eating out around the country  – and wants to see me cooking some of the more adventurous stuff I used to do BK (before kids). Mind you the latter was some considerable time ago  .

Hope you enjoy the new blog…but, bejesus, it’s a lot more work than “Where The Fatdog Walks”.

  3. Lovely! Another foodie blog to follow. (The other one (on my blogroll) is for a friend who lives in Delhi). More food ideas to read and try out. I enjoy cooking – and eating! :-)

PS I like the look of the blog – good choice of wordpress theme.

Long while since I’ve done the serious cooking bit Sheila…used to do all sorts – make bread, jam, all styles of recipes. This is a long overdue return to the kitchen.

Quite like the eating bit myself! :D

Glad you liked the blog – I’m off to check out your friend’s blog.

  5. More of a pie and beans person myself :)

I’m sure you’ve sneaked in the odd chip butty as well, Alex. :D

  7. I didn’t notice until today your “Eats, Cooks & Leaves” motto. Has it always been there? Anyway, I bought a copy of “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” when it was first published, and also gave copies to a few co-workers. I used that as a reference more than I did a formal reference. It’s a fun book, easy to use and I love it.

Put it on a few days ago now…but you are quite correct Florene…it wasn’t there at the start. I thought it appropriate for a wannabe restaurant critic  . The book is one of J’s many bibles – she’s a bit fussy about grammar and apostrophes in particular!

  9. Good for J! Here in the US grammar and proper English are fast fading…. in ALL the media. It’s like “who cares?” It began in our schools in the 60s or 70s when English teachers turned from grammar to composition content. Thought was the content of a composition was of primary importance. Short-sighted, that was, because now you sometimes can’t understand the content because of errors in composition. Thus: Eats, Shoots and Leaves. We just go ’round and ’round, generation by generation.
    Off my soapbox for today!

    Excellent rant Florene! :D

J would like to bring back capital punishment for sign writers who put their apostrophes in the wrong place. We had the same problem with how grammar was taught – not long after J and I left school – and it’s gone downhill ever since.
